Dart Manufacturing Company
1908
10hp, air-cooled two-cylinder engine, two-speed planetary transmission, chain
drive, wooden wheels and rear-wheel brake.
Research notes that the Dart
Manufacturing Company of Anderson, Indiana primarily built gasoline engines
during the first decade of the 20th century, but a catalog from 1910 indicates
the company did build at least one chassis throughout its production history.
Also noted is the fact that there was apparently no connection with the famous
Dart trucking firm in Waterloo, Iowa, despite the fact this company was once
also based in Anderson and did build a prototype car known as the Dartmobile in
1922.
With its two-seater buggy-like stance the Dart Manufacturing
Company’s motor car was typical of the era, if not a little conservative. The
Dart was powered by a two-cylinder, air-cooled engine with a simple but
effective two-speed planetary transmission and chain drive. To fire the engine
of a Dart one must begin outside the car and complete nine simple steps.
Once completed, the motorist would be ready to get behind the wheel, set the
throttle and spark at the appropriate running speed, then engage the planetary
transmission to start rolling.
